Man Convicted Of Murdering Partner

Mr Douglas has been convicted after Trial at the High Court in Livingston of murdering his partner, Ms Walker, who he was with for 31 years. Mr Douglas thereafter attempted to kill himself at their home in Edinburgh. Mr Douglas was convicted after a majority verdict. During the trial it came to light Mr Douglas believed his partner was having an affair and became extremely jealous.

Mr Douglas admitted killing his partner but stated he was suffering from a mental illness and therefore would accept the charge of culpable homicide but he was not guilty of her murder due to his diminished responsibility. He was examined by psychiatrists at Carstairs Hospital for many months, who all came to the conclusion he did not suffer from any mental illness. The attack on Ms Walker was extremely violent, the jury heard. Mr Douglas’ defence solicitor stated this was “a tragedy of mammoth proportions.” Sentencing is due to take place next month and Mr Douglas was remanded in custody.
