Man Convicted of Charges Related to Terrorism Imprisoned for Seven and a Half Years

Sam Imrie has been jailed after glorifying terrorist acts by mass murderers online and encouraging terrorism.

The 24-year-old posted onto Telegram and Facebook statements which glorified terrorism acts by terrorists Anders Breivik and Brenton Tarrant, amongst others.

At trial at Edinburgh High Court Imrie was convicted of two charges under the terrorism acts and six other charges. He posted online that he was going to livestream footage of an ‘incident’ and also posted footage pretending that he had set fire to an Islamic centre.

Imrie made offensive comments about the Muslim and Jewish communities and had a photo of Hitler as his screensaver. He also uttered racial remarks which the charge stated he did with the intention of encouraging acts of terrorism.

Lord Mulholland in sentencing Imrie stated: that he was ‘spreading hate’ and told him to use his time in jail to ‘remove hatred from your heart’.

In 2019 Imrie had a copy of The Great Replacement by Tarrant and it was considered. information of the kind ‘likely to be useful’ to someone preparing an act of terrorism. Tarrant had killed 51 people at two mosques in New Zealand in 2019.

Further to this, he was convicted of possessing extreme pornography which included indecent imagine of children and an image involving a human corpse.

Lord Mulholland stated that Imrie revered white supremacists and referred to terrorists as heroes. He added: “You were spreading hate and encouraging others to take terrorist action. Your conduct was despicable. You have no understanding or self-awareness of the hate you sought to spread. Walk around any city, town or village and you will quickly find memorials to people of this country who gave their lives defending the freedoms you enjoy.”

He was sentenced to a seven-and-a-half-year custodial sentence and was put on the sex offenders register for ten years. A five year serious crime prevention order was also imposed which will start on the day of his release.
