Justice Of The Peace Courts to Reopen Across Scotland This Week

Justice of the Peace courts are to reopen across the country on Monday, in the latest loosening of coronavirus restrictions in Scotland.

The Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service has announced that all JP court business will resume from Monday 7th June, following a review that was launched after the Scottish Government’s announcement that COVID restrictions would be gradually reduced from the end of May.

This now means that witnesses should attend any case they are cited for either on or after this date, according to the SCTS. This is subject to notification from the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.

The wearing of face coverings remains mandatory both within the court building and the courtroom, unless there is a medical exemption in place.

A spokesman for the SCTS said: “The safety of staff, judiciary and court users continues to be our top priority as JP courts resume…I am pleased to confirm the restarting of JP business and want to reassure all court users that our approach remains rigorous. We have extensive measures in place to ensure the safest possible working environment will be maintained so the courts can continue to operate safely.”
