Glasgow’s Alcohol Court is now one year old after been set up after the success of the Drug Court set up in 2001. The Court, which started out as a pilot, became permanent after its success was apparent after just a few months. This court deals with cases where the offender accepts or the court is of the view that the person must attribute their offending to significant alcohol abuse.
The court does not currently deal with domestic issues. The referrals to the court can be made by all Glasgow Sheriffs. Due to the volume of the Court’s business it is now presided over by two sheriffs. Now 61 percent of the offenders sent to the Court have been made subject to an Alcohol Court order and the monitoring provisions that come along with this.
