Police Scotland have announced that by the end of April recorded crime has fallen by around a quarter since the lockdown began in Scotland in late March. Police Scotland have stated that about one fifth of calls are now people reporting others for lockdown related offences and there has also been an increase in reports of fraud. Surprisingly, Police Scotland did report a small decrease in the number of domestic incidents being reported but confirms this may not be accurate and reflect the true picture and it also been reported there has been an increase in persons using the Domestic Abuse Disclosure Scheme. However, the amount of call for noise complaints have also increased which is to be expected with everyone spending a lot more time at home. The Justice Secretary for Scotland has stated in response to the published figures: “we must continue to seek to protect the public and reduce opportunities generated by the current Covid-19 outbreak that some will use to exploit members of the public.”
