Scotland’s largest jail has to be sold and replaced with a new site. The Scottish prison service has identified three sites that need approval from the government.

The new prison will cost around £100 million and will remain in the Glasgow area. The Scottish prison service have stated: “Barlinnie is a Victorian prison and in need of replacement.” The SPS and Scottish government have stated they are committed to improving and modernising the prions estate which is now not fit for purpose.
