The sixteen year old who murdered a six year old girl in the Isle of Bute, who has now been named as Aaron Campbell, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of her murder at a Trial at Glasgow High Court last month. The punishment part of the sentence has to last 27 years before he can be considered for Parole. However, Lord Matthews stated that Mr Campbell may never be released from Prison, as this decision was in the hands of others in the future.
Campbell was also placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely. Lord Matthews said: “It is difficult to imagine the distress which her family must have suffered, not only when she went missing but when the awful news came in that she had been found dead. That distress can only have been intensified, if that was possible, by their finding out the extent of what you did to her, not only in the weeks and months immediately afterwards but in the course of the trial.” He continued that Mr Campbell attitude was appalling and remarked on Mr Campbell taking a picture of himself stating her was the killer of six year old Alesha as an alleged joke for his friends stating: “The arrogance and callousness of that is breathtaking.” Lord Matthews stated the defence counsel did all he could do for him.
The Judge continued that he was ‘shocked’ when he saw the contents of the court reports in which Mr Campbell had admitted his guilt to a social worker and a clinical psychologist. The report confirmed that he was not suffering from any form of mental illness and that he was satisfied in the way the murder was carried out.  Parts of the reports were read to the Court at the sentencing hearing this Thursday.
